Strategic Approach

There is no single and direct approach to energy management in organisations. The corporate culture and existing management systems are determinants of the most effective methods. However, there are some common themes in organisations that successfully manage energy and it is useful to think of these themes as three overlapping phases of energy management activities.

Phase 1 - Gaining control over energy consumption.
Phase 2 - Investing in energy saving measures.
Phase 3 - Maintaining control over consumption.

Energy management can be regarded as having three key elements.

Technical - The energy consuming devices and systems that use energy efficiently.

Organisation - The structure and management systems that can support or hinder the achievement of energy efficiency goals.

People - The personal values, attitudes and practices of individuals in the organisations that impact on energy use.
