Introduction – Energy Conservation

Promoting efficient use of energy and energy conservation has been gaining the attention of the Government of India for quite sometime. It is now recognised that energy must be treated as precious commodity, with the ever widening gap between the demand and supply of energy, due to fast depleting fossil fuels on the one hand and phenomenal growth in energy requirement on the other, the need for energy conservation has become imperative.

There is enormous potential and opportunities for reducing energy consumption by adopting energy efficiency measures in the domestic and industrial sectors. The top management of an organisation needs to establish an atmosphere that promotes energy conservation, as energy management is a combined technical and managerial function.

Energy conservation is not to decrease the quality of life by living in darkness, but rather to apply the technology available to increase the efficiency of our systems. Saving of scarce electricity will not only release wasted power for much needed applications, but it would save industry enormous amounts in power consumption charges and associated penalties. Energy conservation offers significant favorable impact on productivity and profitability of an organisation.
