Mining Methods since inception

Board & Pillar method was adopted in all areas upto the year 1948 and with purely manual, from 1948-58 Manual & Semi-mechanised coal lifting. During 1958 –1960 the 1st longwall face was worked at No.5 incline Kothagudem with coal plough, penzer conveyor for coal clearance at face with sand stowing. Since coal plough was not able to cut the coal, drilling and blasting was practical for dislodging coal. Later this method was dispensed to re-introduce longwall with shearer, AFC and 4 legged chock shields in 1983.

Till the year 1975, SCCL operated only underground mines, before opening up Manuguru Area. OCP-I of Manuguru was the first OCP SCCL worked and as on day 11 OCPs are yielding coal production. Opencast method is adopted later to extract developed pillars of u/g mines after u/g mine is closed or isolated

In 1983, the first fully mechanised Longwall face was started at GDK-7 Inc., later in GDK-9 Inc. (1985 ?) , VK-7 inc.(1985), JK-5 Inc. 1989, GDK-11A(1992 ?) , GDK-10A (1994), PVK (1995).

In 1989, with French Collaboration, Blasting gallary method was introduced at GDK-10 Inc. latter GDK-8 Inc., VK-7 and now introduced at GDK-6B of Ramagundam and 21 inc. of Yellandu. This method is useful for extraction of thick seams (more than 7 metres) and percentage of coal recovery is around 85%.

In the coming years proposals are hand to introduce longwall in shaft blocks behind 300 mtrs depth.
